Facial masks (homemade spa time)

This is an article about how to care for your skin and create masks with natural ingredients at your house, in the kitchen.

Masks have made a name for themselves in the past few years. Everyone posts photos of themselves with the masks that come in a packet and make you look like a mass murderer. While I do love these masks, I am cognisant on the waste they produce. Making masks at home is a 1-2x/week ritual in the winter when I take baths.

Facial masks help: hydrate, refine pores and give skin an even tone. I recommend using 2-3 times a week and making sure the ingredients are in congruence with your skin (i.e. if you have dry or oily skin, make sure you are hydrating or helping to extract oils).

Recipe ideas

One of my favorite at home ingredient is honey. Honey is antiviral and antibacterial, which helps fight acne. Honey clears skin of oil, dirt, and blackheads. Try mixing honey with: vitamin C, oatmeal, lavender essential oil, avocado, coconut oil, yogurt, banana, turmeric or spirulina. All or any of these combinations are very hydrating.

Light a candle or drink some tea while you utilize these masks (:

Simple Honey + Oatmeal Mask

Ingredients: Honey, oatmeal

instructions:

  • mix together even parts, depending on how much you want to use (I usually make masks for two days + sometimes I make a mask for more than the face [think: neck, shoulders, arms, abdomen])

  • spread on your face evenly

  • because there is oatmeal in it you can give your body a scrub and exfoliate the skin

  • leave on skin for 10 minutes

  • rinse with water + mosturize after your bath or shower

Glycerine + Vitamin C mask

ingredients: glycerine, vitamin c

instructions:

  • mix one tablespoon of glycerine to one teaspoon of vitamin c

  • spread evenly on face, do NOT get mask in your eyes as vitamin C causes irritation

  • leave on skin for 5 - 10 minutes

  • if the mask starts to burn, rinse immediately with cool water

  • rinse after designated time and apply face serum or mosturizer
